Hart-Davidson Article

I found that the main points that were trying to be made in this article were kind of the basis of what we are trying to accomplish with our writing logs.  Hart-Davidson talks about the use of time diaries and making people realize how often they write and what they consider writing to be.  I thought that it was interesting when it talked about how often people didn’t realize they were writing because they didn’t previously considered what they were doing to be actually writing.  When Hart-Davidson was performing their studies they asked the people to write what they were writing with, what for, and what time they were writing at.  In class, we are doing the same things with our writing logs.  Hart-Davidson found that this was a really good way to study individuals  writing habits and used the information to relate to how people used writing in their everyday life.  Again relating back to our writing logs, I have found that by filling out the writing log, I have realized how much writing I actually do in a day and how often.

This old spice commercial is meant to be funny.  It keeps the viewer entertained and listening and at the same time almost mesmerized.  It shows an attractive man who seems to represent every female fantasy that there is which catches the attention of both the male and female viewers.  In this commercial I think that there is all three forms of rhetoric represented.

Pathos is the most used form of rhetoric in this commercial by far.  In a way, you could possibly say that the entire commercial is using Pathos because there is humor and imagination being used throughout the commercial’s entirety.

Logos is being used in this commercial when the man says, “you will smell like me if you switch to old spice.”  They are implying that a successful and attractive man should always smell like old spice and that in order to become successful and handsome you must start using old spice.

Ethos in this commercial is almost blanketed with the humor that is presented in the commercial; however, I still believe that it is there.  There is no doubt that old spice will make you smell good, so that is a fact.  However, the commercial implies that you will become handsome, rich, and the icon of a female’s fantasy if you start using old spice.  This is of course untrue and adds to the humor aspect of the commercial.

Audience Proposal/Analysis

For this paper I will be writing about what Oktoberfest is really meant to celebrate and represent.  This paper will be focusing on Oktoberfest celebrations that are held in places other than in Germany.  I have chosen to do this because I feel that when people are at the Oktoberfest celebration in Munich, Germany they get caught up in the atmosphere and sometimes end up celebrating the culture and tradition without really knowing it.  By focusing this paper to people who attend “mock Oktoberfest celebrations” I feel that I can really make people realize that Oktoberfest is a beer festival, but there is much more depth and history to it than just getting drunk and acting stupid.  In many cases the “mock Oktoberfest celebrations” do not do a good job of showing the true meaning of Oktoberfest.

My audience for this paper will be directed to mostly the younger crowd.  Mainly those people who are in the age range of 16-30 years.  I have chosen this age group because these are the people who are most likely to be the party animals.  The majority of the time they are the ones who are going to use Oktoberfest as a chance to go out and get drunk and do extremely irresponsible things.  The fact that they are younger may be the cause of this, or other things could be to blame, like they were un-educated.  However, I feel that saying that just because someone goes and gets drunk means that they are un-educated.  I have come to the conclusion that people see Oktoberfest in this wrong way for two possible reasons.  First, people like to have fun, and a celebration that glorifies beer gives them a chance to have a lot of fun.  Second, many of the people who attend these celebrations have only known Oktoberfest to be that way.  When they grow up, everyone was partying and getting drunk.  For some reason people have chosen to avoid the other aspects of the celebration and focus in solely on beer.  If a fest goer is only aware that the celebration is about drinking beer, well what do you think they are going to do?

Oktoberfest has become so popular that it is celebrated all around the world by many different cultures.  The fact is though, is that some of these festivals are not properly celebrating the traditional meaning of the Oktoberfest celebration.  There many things that Oktoberfest is meant to celebrate, not only beer.  The fact that many of the festivals have glorified the beer drinking and party aspect of their Oktoberfest is a disgrace to the German culture.  That is why I have chosen to write my paper in a “letter to the editor format that will be put in the La Crosse Tribune.  The La Crosse Tribune is a major paper in the La Crosse area.  The city of La Crosse holds and annual Oktoberfest celebration and it is an extremely popular event.  There are many colleges in La Crosse as well which creates a more party atmosphere during the Oktoberfest celebration.  I believe that if I do a well enough job explaining that Oktoberfest is really about many people will show more respect during certain celebration events.

Questions for Thursday Presenters

barth348:

Devin VanDyke: Did your research include anything about setting up a work out routine? Maybe what methods are best? Also, what did you find about how long you should stick with a routine before varying it?

Ethan Lapham: Is there more than one location for October Fest in Germany?

Ethan’s Response

No, in Germany there is only the one celebration that is held in Germany and that is in Munich.  However, there are many other cities around the world that hold Oktoberfest celebrations in honor of the original.

Toulmin’s Argument Model

Eat, Pray, Spend

Claim:  The American people are living in a “post-feminist” world where they are expected to spend money in order to make them feel more worthy and beautiful.

Data:  The media is exposing the normal everyday citizen to the life of the rich and famous and making people believe that they need something expensive to improve their current unhappiness.

Warrants:  Spending money on expensive things to improve your happiness may only create happiness for a short time and also sometimes creates a false happiness that is later realized.

Backing:  This article reference many popular figures like Oprah which catches the reader’s attention.  Using such a powerful figure like Oprah in this article makes the reader really believe what is being said because of how many people idolize and believe in a person like her.

Rebuttals:  This article does not take into account an individual’s personal opinion and their right to do what they want.  If a person works and earns their money, they should be able to do what they please with that money, and if that means getting breast implants, that’s their choice.

Qualifiers:  This article uses very strong words like empowerment, right, extreme, and intense, which catch the reader’s attention and emphasize the seriousness the authors have towards their claims.

Question and Concerns

1) I feel like a couple of my paragraphs in the middle of my paper may need to be worked on a little.  They may be to informative and need some word play to make them a little more interesting.

2) I am a little worried about punctuation.  I have not gone to the writing center and someone who is good at correcting punctuation mistakes are sometimes hard to come by.

3) I hope that I am relating my recreation with the culture well enough.  It is difficult to make beer drinking seem like a cultural tradition without hurting the German culture’s image.

Everyone in this world belongs to some kind of group or culture.  They have certain things that they practice or for that matter, don’t practice.  The things that that culture chooses to do represent who they are and what they believe in.  To them, that is the normal way of life and everyone else is different.  Let’s say for instance, you are comparing Catholics and Lutherans.  The Lutherans do many things different than the Catholics do which some would consider being not normal.  Some things may be considered more extreme or less extreme depending on what group you fall into.  This of course, is not the best example of an extreme difference between two different cultures or groups, but I think that it paints a very good picture and gets the relative idea across.  Instead, let’s compare a person who considers themself a Catholic, and is a member of a church, but usually only attends Christmas and Easter services along with a couple others scattered randomly throughout the year, to the Pope.  These two people have similar beliefs in god, but unlike the Pope, who devotes almost every minute of every day to God and the Bible, the irregular church goer only devotes a few Sundays and a prayer every now and then to God.  The irregular church goer can probably consider himself in the majority of the population compared to the Pope and would likely consider himself “normal.”  Because the Pope devotes so much time into God, he could be considered “extreme” to some people and also in the minority of the population.  When the author uses the word “otherness,” he is referring to how the irregular church goer sees those who are more extreme in their practices and beliefs than he, like possibly the Pope, even though they believe in the same general idea.

Diedr07 told me that he played baseball when he was in high school when we met the first day of class so I already had an idea about the kinds of things he liked to do.  After reading his post though, I had a deeper understanding of how much he enjoyed playing baseball and that it was a big part of his life as he went through high school.  His post also tells me that he likes to have fun with his friends and enjoys meeting people who share the same interests or at least similar interests as he does.

After reading Barth348 post about his Facebook image I am able to better understand what he likes to do and activities he fills his day with.  It is easier for me to understand Barth because I am also an Alpha Gamma Rho member.  The two of us know eachother fairly well and the image he creates of himself on Facebook is a true one.  Just from being around him I can tell that he likes being here at school and enjoys being an AGR member.
